About The Project

The family have a passion for traditional style of decor so they purchased this beautiful Regency property with the intent to fully restore and renovate to be their forever home.

The first thing they wanted was a new family bathroom, a re design and en-suite install to one of the bedrooms as it was totally difunctional, a classic home study and the hall/stairs/landing to have a full redecorate using some unique wallcoverings.

The clients insisted we used traditional methods for any restoration work. For example, any repair work or new walls had to be done in lime plaster, the tiles for the bathrooms were from Craven Dunhill which is local to the area and steeped in history, another specification that was important to this project. This ensured the house kept it’s historic value.

Challenges

With any old houses there is inevitably going to be situations where things don’t always go to plan. The landing ceiling was condemned when we were stripping the old wallpaper off as it was very close to come crashing down. Of course the whole ceiling had to be replaced with lath and plaster.

The wiring was a bit of a mystery too with the electricians having to do a lot re routing and problem solving.

We are currently working on three more rooms in the house, the morning room, relocating the kitchen into a living room, and turning the current kitchen into a family snug room.

Special Skills Employed

The study room was a tricky room to renovate as the client wanted a wallcovering from William Morris inspired by The Brook Tapestry which was a wide width paper.

The hall/stairs/landing was fitted with Lincrusta panelling with an antique brass effect which was hand painted. Lincrusta is a deeply embossed wallcovering, invented by Frederick Walton. … Lincrusta was launched in 1877 and was used in a host of applications from royal homes to railway carriages.

The corner beads of the walls were another little obstacle to get around as the previous owners papered over them. So they were made into a feature above the Lincrusta with some bespoke detailing.
